The Love of Money...The Root of All Evil

There is no handbook for parents of missing children. I think we all know and understand that many things are handled as they come up; one cannot plan ahead when the unthinkable happens to them. With that being said, there are plenty of resources and organizations to assist with various aspects when a child goes missing.

It has come to my attention that some people are concerned about the money trail in this case. If people are concerned about where their donations are going, they do not have to donate. By that same token, if a person solicits donations, they should be willing and able to inform people of the purpose of the donations collected. Some may want to give, but the lack of a definite, truthful answer regarding the use of funds may turn them away.

Per the Accusations for Ayla blog:
In an effort to bring continued awareness for missing toddler, Ayla Bell Reynolds, her mother Trista is organizing the "Ayla's Walk with Trista - A Benefit Walk for Ayla" on 7/14/2012 @ 4 pm. The walk will take participants through some of the favorite places Ayla liked to stroll with her mother. The walk will begin at Monument Square and finish at Deering Oaks Park and is expected to take about 30 minutes. T'shirts and Baseball caps will be sold prior to the walk so come early! Event to be sponsored by LostNMissing Inc. Following the walk will be refreshing drinks and desserts along with a flying lantern release.

Trista did an interview in which she solemnly declared Ayla deceased, and stated that she would never see her again. One cannot help noticing the irony of the situation: while giving this interview, Trista was wearing a shirt that read "bring Ayla home." Trista does not believe that is going to happen, but her shirt speaks volumes (these are the same shirts that the Reynolds family will sell for 20 bucks apiece) . This interview is not the first time that Trista has alluded to the fact that people should no longer be looking for a live child. As early as a month into the investigation, Trista insinuated that Ayla was no longer alive. The evidence that has been released to the public does not support such a drastic change in optimism. The "bring Ayla home" shirts, adorned with Ayla's smiling face, are not congruent with the message Trista is portraying in the media.

In the past, Jeffrey Hanson has said that any funds raised will be used for awareness items. If Ayla has no chance of coming home, and is deceased, what exactly is the awareness for? Where are the proceeds from t-shirt and hat sales going? Why sell awareness items, when at the same time you are telling people to give up hope? I have already sent an inquiry to the IRS, and I encourage anyone else who is concerned to do the same. The form is here, and more information can be found here.  Asking Jeff questions about accountability has been unfruitful. Any comment asking such a question, even in the most innocent terms, is deleted. Why delete simple questions like that, instead of answering them once and for all? Got something to hide, huh?

A bit of information:

Monetary donations can be extremely helpful to families whose lives have been turned upside down by the disappearance of a child. They can be used to help finance the search, fund a reward, or support the family if a parent is unable to work during the search process. But donations can also present problems if they are not managed properly. For this reason, you need to be aware of some important accounting and accountability issues that, if not handled correctly, could result in legal and financial ruin.

Make sure that both you and your contributors know how the money will be used. Donations can be used for many different purposes, depending upon your need. Ask that donations be earmarked for a specific purpose—such as the reward fund, the search fund, or the family support fund—and if they are not, ask one of your volunteers to call the donor to find out to which fund the donation should be given. Seek professional help from both a lawyer and a banker to help you establish separate trusts and accounts and to oversee disbursements.

Designate trusted individuals outside the family to have signature authority over the accounts. By removing yourself from the control of the funds, you eliminate any unnecessary scrutiny by members of the public or the media about the use of the funds. Make sure that the individuals selected for this task are trustworthy and that they understand their role and potential liability.

Be honest with the public. Be prepared for questions, which may turn into accusations, concerning the use of donated funds. Designate one person—who could be you or a trusted friend or family member—to answer all questions concerning how the funds are being spent. Information concerning the number of donations or the amount in the accounts should never be released to the media.

Specify what will happen to the reward in the event your child is located before the money is spent. Sometimes large sums of money in a reward fund are left unspent. Therefore, you need to establish written procedures for how the money is to be dispensed if it cannot be used for the reward. For example, you can specify that all donations over a certain amount are to be returned, if the donor is traceable, or that unused funds are to be donated to an organization or agency that helped with the search. Excess reward fund money should never be used for the family’s personal expenses because that was not the purpose of the fund. Again, talk with an attorney to determine how to handle this situation.

Personally, I do not recommend donating to the family or to LostNMissing (for obvious reasons). Your funds are likely better spent and managed when they go to established national or respected organizations like NCMEC or Texas Equusearch. In the interest of full disclosure, I have to admit that I have never and will never donate to either of these organizations. I believe that the money I set aside for charitable organizations should go to agencies that are more proactive in nature; therefore, I donate exclusively to child advocacy centers.

Demand answers; demand transparency!

Just because Justin and crew hope Ayla's body is never found, doesn't mean the rest of the world wants her poor little body hidden outside in the elements. Bring Ayla home to rest. Send Justin to Prison for the murder he committed!

Whether Ayla is still alive or not, she still needs to be brought home. Although it is perfectly understandable with the information law enforcement has publicly stated--that Ayla's blood was found in the basement of Justin's home, their steadfast belief that an abduction did not occur, and that the three individuals who were in the home the night Ayla disappeared are not being truthful--that the overwhelming majority of people familiar with this case believes that it is highly unlikely that Ayla is being kept alive and well somewhere, there is always the possibility of a miracle. I can only imagine what evidence law enforcement has shared with Trista that the public is not privy to. The purpose of bringing awareness to Ayla's case is not just to bring an alive Ayla home; it is also extremely important to keep Ayla's name and face out there to encourage the public to keep their eyes and ears open to anything out of the ordinary that might help bring Ayla home. There is always the possibility that someone out there saw or heard something in the days leading up to Ayla's disappearance, and/or the evening or morning of Ayla's disappearance that could be the one clue that would break this case and bring justice to Ayla. I sincerely hope that Trista and her family continues their efforts at keeping Ayla's case in the media until Ayla is found and returned to her family.

    4. Question still stands5/27/12, 11:12 PM

Then just do an event for awareness. Without asking for donations. The question still applies. Why sell products that promote awareness towards looking for a live child. You can promote awareness for the case. Keep the case in the public eye. But what is the point of raising money. Money is to put towards billboards, t-shirts, awareness items for children whose parents want them looked for. Trista and the maternal side clearly do not believe that she should be looked for in that manner. So again we ask why are they asking for money? What is it for? Still a valid question.

    5. Geturfactsstraight:
I have not confused the families at all. It is ridiculous to suggest that Ayla's maternal family doesn't want Ayla found. Again, whether Ayla is still alive or not, she needs to be found. Personally, I disagree that Justin wants Ayla to be found. I believe that Justin's biggest concern is himself and staying out of jail.

    6. Question still stands:
The purpose of promoting awareness is to bring a child home regardless of whether the child is alive or deceased. Besides, just because the evidence points towards Ayla not being held somewhere alive and well, the family will always hope for a miracle. It is really sad that you feel the need to suggest that Trista and her family "clearly do not believe that she should be looked for in that manner." I have followed this case from the beginning, and Trista's pain and anguish because her daughter is missing is unmistakable. But, it is obvious that no matter what this young mother says or does, her words will be taken out of context and picked apart by the very few people who support Justin, Elisha, and Courtney's choices not to speak up and tell the truth for Ayla's sake. Every case like this one has the same dynamics going on. I just hope Ayla is found soon, and the nightmare for Ayla's maternal family doesn't end up like the Susan Powell or Kyron Horman cases.

You might want to tell them that if they don't want Ayla found they should stop with the thousands upon thousands of dollars spent on flyers, pins, billboards, and more. That's pretty stupid, if that's their goal.

    9. "The same has been done to the DiPietro family. Go whine somewhere else, we're not buying the psychodramatic babble..."

So typical that you must resort to personal attacks when you don't like the context of a comment. There wasn't anything out of line about my post. Personally, I can't speak for anyone else but myself. I have not bashed or attacked any of the family members of Ayla Bell Reynolds. My information regarding the fact that Justin, Courtney, and Elisha have not told the truth regarding the night or morning Ayla disappeared comes directly from the mouth of the spokesperson of the Maine State Police.

      Delete
    10. Anon. That is not a fact because the police can't know that Aylas paternal family have not told the trutg. Therefore what you are reporting is a fact about a statement of opinion. There is a difference.

Oh, and personal attacks against all of US were begun a long time ago. It's only just now that you're seeing individuals giving it back to you guys. But it wasn't so much a personal attack as a response to you saying that you only wish this nightmare over for the maternal family and that very few people support Justin and his family. Do you have statistics the rest of us don't have? People that I talk to are adamant that they support the Paternal family and that their gut instinct is that they haven't done anything to Ayla.

You don't hear your condescending know it all attitude huh? So the responses you get seem out of place....

Seriously, I'm getting tired of this accusation. Actually, the pic on the site is a TLLOM billboard. Other organizations were added to it by us, not vice versa. We thought that by adding these other organizations who are supposedly helping to find Ayla, it would help keep her name out there better. Seeing as how no one considers TLLOM a "real" organization, do you really think they are going to add our website to their billboards? Think again. I'd be more than happy to show you the emails of our getting billboards put up. And what money exactly are we having to explain? We haven't asked for donations, only for shipping to cover select items that we paid for out of our pockets. If you want to come here and complain, do your research. And try using someone who knows what TLLOM has done as your source, not J4A's blog.

      Delete
    2. TLLOM is pooling resources, making phone calls to get billboards up (by finding sponsors...apparently LRC & LNM helped with that, eh?). Furthermore, doesn't it say ThisLittleLightofMaine.com under Ayla's picture on the billboard? Like it or not, TLLOM got the ball rolling to get the billboards up, whether they paid for it or found sponsors...it doesn't matter. They made it happen. And other things are in the works. With no one pushing for donations, I might add.

Some have offered to help those who are buying items (pens, bracelets, printed items, bumper stickers, etc.) OUT OF THEIR OWN POCKETS, but no one has made a plea for money and the items mentioned were given away AT NO COST. Angela Harry is attempting to set up a legitimate non-profit organization so that even more can be achieved, but it's quite a process so it hasn't been completed yet.

      Yeah, TTLOM totally sucks.

TTLOM has done more for AYLA than any other group out there. They have done so from their own pockets. This being said,Its none of your damned business what they do with THEIR money. It doesnt need to be posted on any site what they are spending their own money on.when they start asking for donations, you can bet they will be completely forth coming with any and all information on funds and expenses.I could not be more thankful to this group of people. They have gone above and beyond anything ANYONE has done for AYLA. I have the utmost respect for these people...every last one of them. Thank you TTLOM. YOU ARE A BLESSING. 5. Did you forget the part where TLLOM is not collecting donations? There is no THEIR money. Until they are an official non profit they will not accept donations. And when they do accept donations it will be very clear what the donations are being used for. They will not refuse to answer that question. Why would they? Better question why would anyone?

    6. Good God in heaven they just never stop. I knew putting those logos on the billboards would create this very situation. LOSTNMISSING did NOT have anything to do with the billboards. She sent me her logo to put on my website etc. And I put it on the billboards because I thought it was a joint effort from these organizations to find Ayla. I thought the "normal" thing to do was to include the name of who's working with he families. That's the truth. But what truth will the crazies spin? I'll stay tuned for tomorrows updates. I bet I know who's home busily writing up lies in retort. -angela

    7. First, anything anyone does in the help to find Ayla is the right thing to do.
Second, why the HUGE need for anyone to gain credit when it should be coming from the heart with no thanks needed, that goes for everybody.
Third, when it becomes non profit whoever is doing the work can get PAID. I for one wuld not be a part of that. Alltho a solution for no one putting money in their own pocket even tho legally (off a missing or deceased child) would be to have enough volunteers that the burden of work is not placed on a few selct individuals.

    8. ...@no thanks: Let me help you. It appears you are twisting things.

There is not and was not a huge need for recognition on the part of Angela and the rest of This Little Light of Maine group. That is very clear. What happened was a bunch of really nasty people started putting out statements that they were NOT telling the truth and had nothing to do with the billboards (about 70) that they put up. Wihout the help of any other organization. So what there was a "huge need" for was correcting more lies. That group has risen above attacks and lies since the beginning and continued their goal. The search for Ayla and getting people to have hope have been their goal. Nothing more. I am ashamed to see how many people spend their days making up stories about them and saying they are lying. V

Maybe she should try another avenue for awareness that is more effective than t-shirts and hats and less expensive. I know, she could give a call over to one of the awareness gurus at TLLOM and I'm sure they can hook her up with some resources. I'm sure tori can tell her their names, she's attacked them enough times and copied their comments from their page enough times that she would be familiar with the go to girls on that page. I hear that is what their plan for the future is, to help parents create and keep up awareness for their missing children. I think those ladies have found their niche. All they need is a cooperative parent and the go ahead for each project, which they've had, working with Justin.

      Delete
    2. That is just a ridiculous argument. Many times for example if you try you can have t-shirts donated. Or at least done at a discounted price when screen printers hear your story. So for example let's just say you have the t-shirts made for $10 and sell them for $20 as Trista was doing. I would say that is a pretty good rate of return. Make a few calls people even without the story there are printers out there who will do t-shirts dirt cheap for teams, non profit groups, or just a good cause. Try another avenue to defend this from JenStenMen.

      Delete
    3. Exactly anon...

Someone donated to cover the costs of the t-shirts, why aim to make a profit? I guarantee the profit margin was enough to line someone's pockets. They are capitalizing off the public sentiment. The baseball caps say I <3 Ayla, but Trista earlier said she doesnt want people laying claim to her daughter or something like that. If it makes a buck, forget everything else, huh?

  10. TLLOM is our name awareness is our game5/27/12, 10:47 PM

We haven't received any money. Unfortunately, Justin has been attacked for his team trying to raise any funds to pay for awareness. I have never charged anyone for any of the items that I have provided or handed out and I know there are a ton of them kicking around because I see the bumper stickers all over the place and the bracelets on people's wrists. Even the Angels are displaying the bumper stickers. Over a hundred Awareness Kits were handed out at the last vigil planned by Lance. No one left empty handed and they never paid for anything. Everything in those kits was donated by TLLOM members. Each kit cost approximately $5.00, give or take a few pennies. Thousands of flyers mailed out over the last 5 months by members to people and businesses all over the northern half of the continent. Correspondence to advertising companies was done by a handful of members for billboard space for not just Ayla but Lisa and Isabel also. OVER 70 of the billboards that TLLOM are responsible for have Ayla's picture on them. They also have the logos of TLLOM, LNM and LRC on them for information pertaining to Ayla's case. TLLOM has been instrumental in awareness for Ayla and the campaign is ongoing. Awareness items and flyers are being passed out all over the East Coast this holiday weekend by various members at tourist locations, travel plazas and parades. Members of Ayla's family and people close to the family are involved in the Memorial Day weekend campaign directly, hitting the streets and handing out flyers and awareness items to travelers from all over the country, and no, you won't see them out on a corner in Waterville. Waterville is not a tourist hot spot and the goal is to reach as many people from away and traveling through the state as possible. There are giant magnets and banners on tractor trailer trucks and delivery vehicles traveling the highways with the TLLOM logo under Ayla's face. ALL of these efforts are funded by members and no money has been solicited from the public to fund Ayla's Awareness Campaign sponsored by TLLOM. TLLOM and it's members have done far more than sell t-shirts. As a matter of fact, we haven't sold ANY t-shirts and don't prefer the t-shirts as an awareness item. We prefer the pins and bumper stickers because they can be every day awareness items for Ayla, where as a t-shirt really can't be worn every day and if it was washed and worn every day it would not last long. The t-shirts are a good tool but they are just not as cost effective when it comes to keeping Ayla's face visible on an every day basis no matter where you are and what you're doing like the pins and bumper stickers. The doubters can continue to doubt and that is ok with me. I don't need the approval of strangers who would attack honest efforts to find a missing baby. TLLOM will keep fighting for Ayla and Lisa and Isabel and when Ayla comes home, because she will, we will keep fighting for Lisa and Isabel as long as we need to.

  11. I agree that it is probably wiser to donate to the reputable organization of your choice, preferably one was a low administrative overhead. Early on TLLOM offered awareness items for sale online through cafe press I believe, or another of those online shop sites. These were quickly withdrawn after criticism followed. I doubt very much that either TTLOM or the Reynolds family expected to get rich off the sale of bracelets, key chains, etc. Public awareness remains important in bringing Ayla home, whatever the outcome.

    1. Eve, This Little Light of Maine not only didn't expect to get rich, but hasn't made a single penny and has put out thousands collectively.

With regards to your reference to awareness items, those were not intended to primarily be sold to the general public, though I did place the link on my website for a couple of days and then removed it.

I created a template for buttons and for business cards for MY OWN GROUP to have a central location to buy them for without having to take the time to design it each time. The company would not allow me to set a royalty rate of "ZERO". I tried. I even emailed asking for an exception. I had no choice but to set it to the lowest rate allowed. It would make a "profit" of about 3 Cents per button--IF anyone had purchased one.

So I put the link up for my group, so that they and I could purchase the things that WE WERE HANDING OUT FOR FREE to anyone who asked and at venues. Though we could have used them, because Justin communicated to the company that he was the father and he wished for those items to be available for purchase to the public, we opted not to because at that point we could still say not one penny had been made. We realized that if we had made 10 cent off of a few buttons we had no account to deposit it into and therefore changed course. Now all purchases are directly by group members and no one is ever charged for the items we mail out. so in addition to the cost of the products and the thousands of flyers, our group eats the cost of the shipping all over the country. It's significant. Many of them can tell you they spend well over a hundred dollars in shipping and/or printing in a month.

There was no intent to make money. Ever. This group has not made one cent. Sadly, we have had to move past each and every one of these accusations from your side, despite the fact that they are invalid and simple attempts to shut us down.

I just wish that people would ask themselves what the point is of it all? We've simply not made money or attempted to. I will give you a heads up that as soon as our non profit status is valid we will be fundraising for further events. And if not for Ayla then for Lisa. And if not for Lisa then for Isabel. And if not for Isabel then for another child. Do you get the point? We are doing it because we can help, so we are helping. The money is coming from our own pockets, period. ~Angela

I'll answer you. I am one member of TTLOM and I have donated over $800 of my own money to my efforts in helping bring Ayla home. Beyond that, I have donated countless hours as well. I have not asked for a dime. Have not questioned anyone who has put forth efforts, because i dont have time to worry about nonsense when children are missing. Ill do what i have to do, and what I can do since there are actually people out there who would take their time to interrupt our efforts to help Ayla we will have to deal with them along the way too. That's just how we have to work right now until the organization is a non profit and then the crazies cannot question our whole hearted efforts to find missing children. Ayla you are our focus, don't worry. <3

    2. Non profits have to be held accountable for where their funds go as well. I give thanks to ALL who do anything to bring Ayla home wheather it is thru donations, keeping Aylas name out there no matter what they think happened, calling in tips to LE, searching, placing posters, having t shirts printed, talking to media and asking the hard question and answering them.
The arguing is OLD and that will only stop if EVERYONE checks their egos at the door and understands that not everyone has the same opinion. EVERYONE !
But, that won't happen so choose your words carefully and avoid those comments that make fun or mocks, showing disrespect for AYLA.

    3. No." Just asking" you are wrong. You should do some research before you ask those questions meant to presuppose that have us pinned somehow. We are not a non profit yet. We take no donations and we only purchase things as the volunteers we are. If you are suggesting otherwise then you should realize that would mean Trista and her family as well as their supporters who have purchased bracelets pins and tshirts would be guilty of the same. But as luck would have it I am within my rights as a human to spend 30, 300 or 3,000 dollars on purchasing items to give away for awareness of either a missing child, or a missing puppy, or a missing set of keys as I see fit. No one can legally tell me that I can't. So for Ayla I have spent a lot. She matters to me. It's quite legal for people who feel the same way to choose to purchase things individually or go in together on something. That's what has been done. -a

    4. gotta chime in. I can't believe the idiot behavior I'm seeing from people. They have taken a statement by someone and run with it, no verification necessary.

This Little Light of maine hasn't raised money from the public. they are a group of individuals that uses their own funds to purchase what they need. Believe it or not, some people don't piss away their money on drugs. So they have funds available in their own accounts to do these things.

Don't like it? You're going to have to keep fuming and come up with something better. You can not report someone to the IRS for raising money when they haven't. You also can't report a group to the IRS for saying they are a non profit when they never have. You people are INSANE. -yb

  13. I don't know specifically what's been spent, but it has to be in the thousands. However, one person isn't taking donations & doing all of the organization & ordering. One person ordered/paid for flyers, another person pens, another bracelets, etc. I would say that around 10-15 were/are involved in those efforts, all out of pocket.

I know that others have offered to help defray the cost by chipping in, but still the majority was paid for by each individual who chose to order whichever piece they took on.

The billboards & notices put in train stations was part of a group brainstorming, making calls, and using resources to make it happen. It really was a collaborative effort that I was amazed to see come together.

Had I not been struggling with my own physical health issues, I would've loved to have been a more active part of the whole process.

    1. Don't you feel like your efforts weren't important for one second! They were and continue to be. We all do what we can Michelle. Thank you.
